Abstinence is saying yes to the rest of your life.

Critics of Abstinence Education

by LeAnna Benn

Critics of abstinence education ignore: 1) Not all abstinence programs have religious components, others have separate grant checking accounts and events 2) Most programs, given time, include reproductive anatomy information; fetal development, major STD’s including HIV and discussion of condoms and many social skills 3) The students served range from age 10-16, all under the legal age for sexual consent. Anything encouraging sexual activity with a minor could be viewed as contributing to the delinquency of a minor under state law. 4) The term “medical accuracy” is a misnomer. Medical information evolves. Medical professionals use the term “medical opinion” so educators unless they want the State to be the gatekeeper of these “fact” should use the term “medically referenced” since various medical opinions are considered appropriate.

Abstinence education gives skills to parents and teens to avoid the physical, emotional, social, intellectual and financial consequences of premature sexual activity.
