Legislative advocate ask these questions of Department of Health DOH, the organization that would regulate “medical accuracy.” They determine which facts can be used. (This is an on-going e-mail message so it is in reverse order)

Good afternoon Rep (name),

The list of organizations that we provided for your consideration is a preliminary list of organizations of repute in the scientific arena.  We hope to add to this list with organizations that have gained national recognition for their scientific expertise and competence to determine "medically and scientifically accurate information".

Thank you for your interest.

Two questions:

Why no single issue groups?

Are there any reputable, abstinence associations or groups with expert knowledge or scientific information on the subject?  I don’t understand. It seems to me that if I wanted specific or scientific information on smoking or what have you, I would first look at issue specific organizations.

Thanks,

In compiling the short list of organizations that we considered as having relevant expertise to determine “medically and scientific accurate information” we attempted not to include any

single issue focused organization.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

Per your request from earlier today regarding the definition of “medically and scientifically accurate information”, here is DOH’s short list of organizations that we would consider as having relevant expertise in the field of abstinence education/comprehensive sexuality:

*          CDC - regardless of their level of expertise in abstinence education

per se, we look to them as an organization with competence in determining information that is accurate and objective.

*          National Institute of Health

*          American Public Health Association

*          American Academy of Pediatrics

*          Society for Public Health Education

*          American Psychological Association

*          American Medical Association

I hope this is helpful.  Let me know if you have any additional questions regarding these bills.
