SIECUS E-Mail Alert—Feb. 7, 2002
We received the following responses to today's request for information regarding the impact of medical accuracy legislation on abstinence education programs. Thanks to those of you who shared your knowledge with the list. Please remember to include your name and contact information or an indication that you wish to post anonymously when sending a message to the list. _________________________ To my knowledge California is only state to implement this language in law. We've tried a couple times - debate became about mandating topics (sexual orientation and abortion) and around who would define what is medically accurate - we referred to Webster, AMA and CDC. Good luck Kathleen Baldwin Planned Parenthood of Greater Indiana ________________________
There is no research to date that indicates abstinence only education is effective. There is however, research to indicate that comprehensive, medically accurate sexuality education, along with information on contraception, is effective in reducing teenage pregnancy. The "Call To Action" issued in July by Surgeon General David Satcher was a step in the right direction. It was based on a broad review of all the research to date and recommends that all Americans work together to "improve the access to sexual health and reproductive health care service to all communities and people". Alan Guttmacher Institute has a recent study that strengthens Dr. Satchers conclusions. As a matter of fact, is has been well documented, that most educators and parents want and believe responsible, accurate sexuality education is important to help our youth make their own responsible choices. We, along with goverment and community leaders, must work together for our young people to ensure they have what they need to make the right decision regarding their own sexuality. Hope this helps! ________
If you have any further information on the effects of medical accuracy legislation on abstinence or comprehensive sexuality education programs, please share it with the list.
