Sexuality, Commitment, & Family

Senior High Family Life Education: Helps the senior
high student understand an expanded scope of issues related to human sexuality.
Sexuality, Commitment & Family is a value-based skill program
which places human sexuality in the context of commitment, marriage, and
family. The topics in this course collectively stress the importance of a
healthy integration of sexuality into each person’s life.
The program presents
sexuality as a vital part of our identity, closely tied to our feelings of
self-worth and desire to give and receive love. It poses the positive rationale
for premarital abstinence.
Presents mini-courses in communication, respect, self-discipline,
friendship, assertiveness training.
Contrasts qualities of love and infatuation.
Focuses on the power of human sexuality in creating life. Students
explore fetal development.
Trains
students in decision making and refusal skills.
Analyzes consequences of premarital sexual activity.
Examines effects of media influence on views of sexuality.
Involves parents through “Parent/Teen Communicators” which
summarize lesson information and suggest topics for discussion.
A Clear and Integrated Lesson Plan
The 3-6 week course is subdivided into 15 integrated modules,
usually taught in grade 9. May be inserted in health, science, or in Home Economics.
Each lesson includes objectives, points to emphasize, subject content, and
suggested activities and games. Illustrated and three ring bound teacher’s
manual allows for easy reference while teaching.

Mothers, take heart! Your daughters and sons are listening (and watching)
more than you think. A review of survey data taken from kids in the eighth
through eleventh grades reveals that
-
Boys
and girls in all four grades are likely to stay abstinent if they know their
mothers strongly disapprove of premarital sex.
-
Boys
and girls in eighth and ninth grades are likely to stay abstinent if they have
warm, healthy relationships with their mothers. This was also true of boys in
the 10th and 11th grades.
-
Girls in the eighth and ninth grades are likely to avoid sex if their mothers
talk regularly with their friends' parents.
For
those who are not communicating, however, the news is not so good. Half of the
moms whose kids are sexually active were unaware of that fact, and large numbers
of kids whose moms disapprove of premarital sexual activity didn't know it. (Washington
Times, 09.05.02, New York Times, 09.05.02)
